Sexy Pictures and the Democratic Charter
A couple of days ago those barmy bureaucrats in Beijing decided to hit the ground running in 2009 by unleashing an attack on two pillars of counter-revolutionary thought: intellectuals talking sense and internet sites distributing images that reveal the natural curvature of the human form.
The intellectuals, along with their artist and writer buddies, had the temerity to draw up a Democratic Charter a while back. The purge of those that put their name to the document has now begun. Here a snippet of the charter’s content:
— China . . . must divest itself of the authoritarian notion of reliance on an “enlightened overlord” or an “honest official”
— Must “turn toward a system of liberties, democracy, and the rule of law”
— Charter calls for 19 points of change, including rights to freedom of expression and assembly; the separation of powers of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches of government; election of public servants; and a guarantee of human rights.
Dangerous language, indeed. Read more here. The full Chinese version is, of course, blocked in this neck of the woods.
As for the list of sites denounced for their “low and vulgar practices on the Internet”, I’m personally offended at Foundinchina’s omission. In order to rectify this appalling miscarriage of great firewall (in)justice, I present the following ‘vulgar’ images from a site that did manage to make the grade:
I hope nobody feels de-harmonized.
Update
This CSM article at gives a few more reasons why Charter ’08 may yet give the CCP a bloody nose. Hat tip to Richard at Peking Duck.
