Chinese guns in Darfur: a childs eye view

sketch by Abdul Maggit

The BBC reported a couple of days ago that a child’s drawings (the sketch above by Abdul Maggit depicts a typical scene) will be admitted as evidence of the atrocities committed in Darfur:

The International Criminal Court is accepting supporting evidence of children’s drawings of the alleged crimes committed in Darfur.

If you look real close you can see ‘made in China’ stamped on those guns and armoured vehicles. Follow the BBC link to see more damning sketches.

Made in China guns? Heck, some of the guns and RPG’s used by Hamas were made in China. So?

Nobody cared when Saddam slaughtered a bunch of Iranians with his Made in the US arsenal. China has a long way to go to catch up with the US as the biggest arms seller.

stuart, since you have been here for a while, I suppose you understand what ????????????? means. When it comes to being hypocritical, you people are DA BEST.

  2. Pffefer Says:

Well, just realized that your blog doesn’t support Chinese characters. Whatever. You know what I wanted to say.

    Pffefer,

It’s not at all hypocritical. I would like to see China demonstrate the kind of moral leadership sadly lacking in previous global powerhouse nations. Unfortunately, they appear disinclined to show anything of the kind.

And where’s the moral outrage in its citizenry over issues like Darfur, Burma, or Zimbabwe? Where’s the op-ed piece in China Daily condemning the Chinese government’s role in fuelling overseas conflict?

It’s not about what has gone before or what others are doing; it’s about China. She’s a global stakeholder in every imaginable way now and we’re all waiting for her to wake up to the moral responsibility that is required of a powerful nation. Thus far, in keeping with a government bereft of checks and balances, she shows no sign of accepting such responsibility.

“Well, just realized that your blog doesn’t support Chinese characters.”

I don’t support the sale of arms to despots either.

Tell you what, I’ll provide Chinese character support on this site if Hu Jintao expresses regret for June ’89 on the 20th anniversary this year. Sounds fair to me.

    stuart,

It IS hypocritical for you to demand moral leadership from poor developing countries like China while giving rich developed countries like the US and the uk a free pass. And I have said many times before, China has no tradition to lecture and preach, a western tradition.

Seriously, who cares if your blog supports Chinese characters or not?

  5. stuart Says:

“China has no tradition to lecture and preach”

I assume that was said with tongue firmly in cheek. Besides, China can’t hide behind the veil of a ‘poor, developing country’ these days. Its global influence is very real and, as yet, is not excercised with sufficient humanitarian or environmental restraint.

  6. Pffefer Says:

Tongue in cheek? Not at all. Seriously, other than when it perceives that its “One China” policy is infringed upon, China doesn’t lecture and preach. It is really something the self-righteous west does.
